In all respects, South Africa is the continent's most varied country and this is no less true when it comes to riding safari. From fast paced riding in big game country to a winery tour on horseback, polo on iconic fields or a romantic hack along the coast, riding in South Africa offers something for everyone. There are also some wonderful options for mixed groups of riders and non-riders.
On the edge of Kruger National Park, Wait a Little offers thrilling fast and furious riding on lovely horses alongside a dizzying array of game. For families, we tend to recommend Ant’s Nest and Horizon Horseback Safaris in the Waterberg area, both of which have a huge range of horses and ponies, and offer everything from short hacks and gymkhana games to longer, faster rides. On the Cape Coast, Kurland is well suited to families and polo players and Grootbos (near Hermanus) offers riders a chance to amble through the fynbos vegetation and even spot Southern Right whales from horseback as they make their annual migration.
