Zomba Forest Lodge

Zomba Forest Lodge is half-way up the 6,000 foot high Zomba Plateau. On top of the mountain there are acres of cedar, pine and cypress and a mix of other natural vegetation. The plateau top is criss-crossed by streams and has many waterfalls and lakes.

Accommodation & Facilities
Zomba Forest Lodge is an old colonial house set in spacious grounds and it has four simple en-suite bedrooms and a cosy and intimate lounge and dining room with a fireplace. It is completely off-grid so at night the lounge is lit up mainly by candlelight, paraffin lamps and solar lanterns bathing the rooms in a wonderfully atmospheric glow. The lodge has two friendly dogs.

Wildlife & Activities
A semi-resident troupe of samango and vervet monkeys lives near the lodge and several species of antelope are occasional visitors to the grounds. There are several excellent walking trails around the lodge and on the top of the plateau, where the fantastic viewpoints were described in colonial times as being some of ‘the best in the British Empire’. Zomba Forest Lodge is a great place for walking and hiking, and other activities include bird watching and guided tours from the lodge and around the plateau, birdwatching at Lake Chilwa, a visit to Chikala Pillars, excursions to Zomba Market, and seasonal wild orchid walks. Horse riding can be arranged a little way from Zomba town down on the plains.
