Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge
Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge is a beautiful lodge at 2,100 metres high up on Nteko Ridge, with breathtaking views of the series of Virunga volcanoes and the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. The lodge is owned by the Nkuringo community, who also provide most of the wonderful staff.
Accommodation & Facilities
Clouds has eight cottages built from local stone with sitting rooms, en-suite bathrooms, fireplace, soft armchairs and warm duvets, and outdoor decks with views of the forest or farmland and the volcanoes. Two cottages have two bedrooms and are ideal for families or friends. The main lodge, which is decorated with local crafts and artwork, has plenty of open fireplaces to keep guests warm, a dining room where lovely meals made from produce grown in the vegetable garden or sourced locally are served with good wine. There are plenty of sofas and armchairs, creating spaces for people to gather and enjoy conversations about their adventures, and a generous bar and library. The big, sheltered verandahs have views of the volcanoes and the lush botanical garden.
Wildlife & Activities
The purpose of Clouds is to protect mountain gorilla habitat, which directly benefits the community of Nkuringo. Activities include gorilla trekking in Bwindi, with access to Nkuringo and Rushaga habituated gorilla families, spending time with conservation experts as they habituate new gorilla families, guided walks in Buniga Forest, bird watching, visits to the Batwa community and village walks to meet the local craftsmen and women. Kayaking on Lake Mutanda is also on offer, along with walks on the lakeshore.
