Shimmering waterways, desert sands, and salt pans
Botswana is, without doubt, one of Africa’s finest safari destinations. At the heart is the Okavango Delta, where the Okavango River fans across desert sands in a myriad of shimmering waterways and lagoons, giving birth to a green oasis half the size of Switzerland. A safari here is a nature lovers’ paradise as one of the world’s richest ecosystems it teems with wildlife. It’s not unusual to see vast herds of buffalo, lechwe, and zebra, and impressive cats. Though much of the water is seasonal, there are permanent rivers, and mokoros and boats glide silently by groves of papyrus and iridescent flocks of birds such as herons, pelicans, and bee-eaters.
To the north of the Okavango Delta is the Chobe River, which attracts some of Africa’s largest elephant herds and is within easy driving distance of Victoria Falls. To the south the extraordinary Makgadikgadi and Nxai pans, drum-flat and shimmering in the sun, give way to the stunning scarp of the Kalahari, home to Bushmen communities, habituated meerkats, and a flamboyance of flamingos.
