Campi ya Kanzi
Campi ya Kanzi is a small privately owned and run safari lodge located in the Chyulu Hills. The lodge is part of an eco-tourism joint venture between the owners and the local Maasai people, and has an amazing location within a private concession on Maasai owned land. The concession is adjacent to the Tsavo West and Chyulu National Parks, and the lodge has stunning views down the slopes of the Chyulu Hills over both Tsavo and Amboseli National Parks to Kilimanjaro.
Accommodation & Facilities
At the centre of the camp is Tembo (“elephant”) House, a beautifully constructed bar and dining room with a thatched roof and open sides and a large verandah. Campi ya Kanzi has six luxurious tents and two larger suites, all built on wooden decks. Each one has a private verandah from which guests have superb views of Kilimanjaro and the Tsavo Hills. The accommodation is built from locally sourced materials including stone and wood, with tented walls, and under a thatch roof. All the bathrooms are en-suite with full sized baths, hot and cold running water, flush loos, and showers.
Wildlife & Activities
The Campi ya Kanzi concession has more than 50 species of resident large mammals including elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and waterbuck, and is home to almost 400 bird species. The activities available include wildlife drives in customised safari vehicles, guided bush walks, visits to the local Maasai communities, horse riding with Maasai guides, tours of Tsavo and Chyulu Hills National Parks, fly camping, guided full-day hikes and bush meals. More than many other camps, guests at Campi ya Kanzi will feel part of, and can witness first-hand, the work of the lodge’s own private trust, The Masai Wilderness Conservation Trust, which has been set up to conserve and protect the Masai wilderness, wildlife and cultural heritage. The lodge owners, Luca Belpietro and Antonella Bonomi, are passionate about the empowerment of the local community and encourage guests to take an interest in the trust and its work.
