The Serengeti and the Masai Mara – the ultimate ride-off

Every year, over a million wildebeest and zebra embark on an incredible circular journey between Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara. This Great Migration is fuelled by the relentless pursuit of fresh grazing and water, following the seasonal rains. A riding safari during this time offers an unparalleled and exhilarating connection to the wild.

Wildebeest stretch as far as the eye can see across the Serengeti
The Serengeti, Tanzania
The number of wildebeest is unfathomable and goes as far as the eye can see, which attracts a large number of predators. Kaskazi Horse Safaris’ Serengeti Migration ride runs from January until early April and is a fast-paced adventure which provides the opportunity to witness the spectacle of the wildebeest calving on the Southern Serengeti’s vast plains. Our final campsite was in a secluded area, where vehicles cannot access, reached with an exhilarating gallop across the wildebeest-filled plains. G&Ts were brought to the picket line, whereupon we untacked our horses one-handed whilst sipping away.

Dining at Kaskazi Horse Safari’s mobile camp
The Masai Mara, Kenya
Crossing the Mara River in flood, with honking hippo close by and my horse swimming steadily beneath me, was one of the most exhilarating moments of my life. Offbeat Riding Safaris has a stellar reputation for mobile riding safaris among Africa’s iconic wildlife in the Masai Mara. The riding is varied and exciting, and the horses are well-schooled, responsive, and brave. I enjoyed jumping some naturally felled trees, a course kindly built by the elephants. The campsites are equally impressive. My favourite was perched on top of the Oloololo Escarpment, with sweeping views over the Mara Triangle. Bush breakfasts don’t come with a better view. The team goes above and beyond to create an entirely unforgettable experience. My boots, soaked from that river crossing, would reappear in my tent dry and polished. Every detail is considered, whether that be memorising your sundowner order or tucking your hot water bottle into your duvet in the evening before another adventure-packed day.
