Save the Elephant Foundation

Saba is deeply connected to Save the Elephants, the NGO founded by her father, Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton, in 1993. The organisation’s core mission is to secure a future for elephants in a rapidly changing world.

As a leader in elephant science, Save the Elephants provides cutting-edge insights into elephant behaviour, movement, and intelligence. This knowledge is applied directly to modern conservation challenges. Save the Elephants decades of research and detailed monitoring of over 1,000 elephants in Samburu, produces crucial data for effective landscape planning. The aim is to ensure the long-term integrity of Africa’s ecosystems and conserve abundant wildlife populations as the continent modernizes.

Learn from the reseachers firsthand about the incredible efforts they are going to protect these incredible animals.

Day 8-10: Visit Reteti Elephant Sanctuary

Our final stop is the remote and spectacular Reteti House in Namunyak Conservancy, where we’ll have an exclusive visit to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. Here we will witness the young orphan calves at feeding time and learn about their rescue stories, as well as a behind-the-scenes tour with the excellent team who make it all happen. We’ll celebrate this incredible trip with a farewell dinner hosted by Saba under the African stars.

The Reteti Elephant Orphanage

Today, you can enjoy seeing wildlife as you travel through Samburu and fantastic scenery on the way to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, which is further north on the Namunyak Conservancy. It will take about two and a half hours to reach this ground-breaking project. which is the result of local Samburu people wanting to help orphaned elephants, and other species too. The Samburu have a deep spiritual and cultural connection with and reverence for the wildlife that they coexist with, especially elephants. You can see the work the community is doing at Reteti, meet the amazing people involved in it, and perhaps see some of the rescued animals.
